Essay on Eva Luna and A Dolls House The Nature Of Power

Discuss the nature of power explored in the texts, Eva Luna, and A Doll’s House In the two texts Eva Luna, and A Doll’s House, by Isabel Allende and Henrik Ibsen respectively, there are various people who have power over others. However this power comes in a number of forms, different characters use it for different purposes, and the ways the characters achieve it also differs. These different natures of power allow some people to succeed where others fail, and it is those who succeed that, in the end, have the true power. In the novel Eva Luna, there are various people who are in positions of power. The one who is the most obvious to the reader is the General; a dictator. He has the power to control and manipulate others to do as†¦show more content†¦For Elvira, it is almost that she can’t cope without one of Eva’s stories to get her through the day. And when they were separated, and she would visit Eva, she would ask Eva for ‘a long story to last till the next visit.’ (Allende, 96) The imagination is a powerful thing, and Eva is able to communicate directly with people’s imaginations. It is this ability to cope in, and move beyond oppressive situations that made her life such a success, and her ambitions more achievable. Eva was able to put up with a lot in her time as a servant. She had the self-power to tolerate much harshness from her employers, but when she was unhappy, she did not contain this unhappiness inside her, and let it destroy her emotionally, as perhaps weaker characters might, she let her mind be known, and this is nowhere more obvious, then when she left her job working for the minister: ‘With absolute aplomb, as if it were something I did every day, I lifted the receptacle high and emptied it over the head of the Minister of State – with a single motion of the wrist liberating myself from humiliation. For an eternal second the Minister sat motionless, eyes bulging.’ (Allende, 101) In the play A Doll’s House, both Nora and Torvald have power over each other. However, they are very different types of power. The power of Torvald over Nora is more obvious because it is economic, physical,

Drug Addiction The Deadly Habit - 1259 Words

The Deadly Habit Though some consider drug addiction as a disease, it can completely overrun someone’s life. Drug dependence affects one out of twelve Americans and greatly affects the way they live their lives and the people around them (Hedden, Kennet, Lipari, Medley, Tice,1) . In recent years addiction has been studied extensively and the idea that addiction is a disease is based on the changing of the brain and the extensive work it takes to absolve being dependent on drugs. Drugs not only affect the ones whom use them, but their loved ones as well. I have felt the pain first hand of what drugs can do to people and how they change their lives. A drug addict puts the drug over all else and their lives seem to revolve around finding†¦show more content†¦Seeing this change developed me to become interested in how these drugs hooked their users and ruined their lives. Classifying drug abuse as a disease is not only incorrect, but it takes away the personal responsibilities of the drug user. While the way people get addicted to drugs can be different, it is more-or-less the same for everyone. At the end of the day it falls on the user to make the decision on whether to partake in it or not. A portion of those who choose to do drugs might be more susceptible ad fall due to having an addictive personality. If we call drug abuse a disease you make this problem sound like it’s something you can’t beat without medical attention or with out some special treatment. In today’s society, people have lost their values forcing them to have the inability to take responsibility for their own actions. People don’t believe that they could be the center of the problem or that they’re not strong enough to stop the use of these drugs, and instead, choose to label it as a disease. It takes the blame off them instead of facing t he underlining problem of an addiction that was present from the beginning. Drug addiction is not considered a disease because it is curable without the use of medicine. Tim Holden once reported that â€Å"a patient with cancer is not cured if locked In a cell, whereas an alcoholic is automatically cured. NO access to alcohol means no alcoholism. A person with

The Importance Of Scarcity Free Samples †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Importance Of Scarcity. Answer: The basic problem that every economy face is the problem of scarcity. The terms scarcity implies limited availability. In economics, the problem of scarcity arises because of unlimited wants and limited resources to fulfill these wants. People have to make choices. The choices involve trade off and opportunity cost. The existence of scarcity is the foundation of economics. If there is no scarcity and unlimited supply of resources then people can meet their unlimited needs and wants. However, in reality scarcity exists and this leads to three most important question ofeconomics what to produce. How to produce and for whom to produce. The first question addressed is what goods the economy should produce. This means decision needs to be taken regarding chouce of goods. Weight should be given on necessaery goods. The second question is about technique of productions. The scares resources should be used efficienty. This means production should be undertaken in such a way that optimally uses resources without any wastage and yield maximum benefit (Baumol Blinder, 2015). The third question address the targeted group of individual whose needs are to be staisfied. Priority should be given on invidual that constitutes majority of individual. The importance of scarcity is reflectecd in terms of tradeoff and opportunity cost that people face in their everyday life. Tradeoff means sacrifising somethimg to obtain more of some other. Given fixed resources an economy is able to produce only a certain combination of necessary goods. Now, if quantity of some goods increased then it must be accompanied with reduced production of some other goods (Cowen Tabarrok, 2015). This is the opportunity cost of achieving the extra amount of the goods. If there is no contraints in forms of limited resource then this problem would not exists. Scarcity leads to the problem economic efficiency. The scarcity of resources makes is essential to employ resources in the most efficient manner. The objective is allocate resources among production of different goods in a way that there is no possible option left where more of one good is produced without reducing production of some other good, Such efficiency point is called pareto efficient equilibrium points (Galbraith, 2017). Owing to scarcity problem society always tries to use all of its resources to attain highest level of satisfaction. The scaricity thus leads to problems of economic choice. In daily life people faces different choice problem. The resource is the income. With the limited income they have to make a trade off among different choices. Government faces trade off while taking decision regarding public investment (Sowell, 2014). That is whether to allocate more funds on health care, defense or education. The decision depends on current status or need of the economy. Economist often considers free market as the best means of allocating resources. In the free market resources are efficiently allocated in lines with demand without any intervention. Summing up all the things, it can be said that problem of scarcity exists due to limited resources and unlimited wants and plays a vital role in economic decision making. References Baumol, W. Most Important Considerations Of The Auditâ€Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Discuss About The Most Important Considerations Of The Audit? Answer: Introduction: The American Accounting Association (AAA) founded in the year 1916 is found as having a reputable and most significant history for having a place as a premier community of accountants in academia. The variety of membership has been capable of creating a culture where there is collaboration as well as innovation. The report is aimed at addressing the different types of legal as well as ethical reasons that need to be taken under consideration at the audit division at the Miller Yates Howarth (MYH). The different types of recommendations for the study have also been thought about for the use of the model (Abernathy et al., 2015). The particular study needs to have the application of the AAA ethical decision model shows the ethical issues which are connected to the related case study. The next part of the report has used the relevant case laws as also prepared certain recommendations for MYH managing partners. Determination of Factual Matters: The case provided related to the MYH accounting firm, operates primarily in Queensland and NSW. The organ Fertilisers Pty, is considered to be one of the most primitive clients of the organisation which has its operations located across the places namely Toowoomba as well as Tamworth. The contractor for waste management to the Dumparound Ltd. had been recently changed by Morgan Fertilizers, It was one of the senior audits, Jacqui who had wisdom regarding the community activities and also knew for certain that the local council was carrying out investigation in the Dumparound Limited for the level of toxic waste at one of the particular sites. Ethical issue identification: The thought processes regarding the ethical issues have been majorly found to be deployed on the Morgan Fertilizers Party which changed its waste management contractor to the Dumparound Limited. The existing contract between the Morgan Fertilizer and Dumparound does not include any sort of specification for any sort of damages. The major form of the ethical considerations was raised by Jacqui Leak, who had the relevant knowledge of the fact that Dumparound was being searched by the local council to determine the level of toxic waste at a particular site. Dumparound has not even signed the contract which is thought to be substantially held for 3 years and the implications are a cause of serious concern for Jacqui. Important principles, values and rules identification: Keeping aside the prevalent ethical issue, the major legal issue that is considered has been identified with the AASB 102 on the inventory valuations. The valuation cost requires to be recognised in terms of the asset and the same needs to be carried forward for the recognition of revenue (Onoja Abdullahi, 2015). The code relevant under APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants is found to be applicable to Section 310 conflicts of interest. Regarding the application of this particular rule, the MYH members are required to support the ethical as well as legitimate objectives in terms of the application as well as the significant procedure in the particular organisation. The possible alternatives and their specification: The major specification of the possible alternate options has been found to depend on the evaluation of the appropriate recording of the adjustments in the inventories between the years end as well as the dates of the physical count. Additionally, there is the need of the auditor to analyse the inward and the outward stock movements with the date of cut off date as long as the cut off date is not established with the validity of the date based on the years closing date (Gaynor et al., 2015). Comparison of the values as also the alternatives: The value comparison is based on the APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants application which is found to be applicable with the Section 310 conflicts of interest vs. AASB 102 on valuation of inventories. Depending on the APES application the responsibility of the member to a particular organisation requires to be based on the professional indebtedness to conform to the fundamental principles that are in conflict. It can further be seen that a business member needs to support the employer as also the methods and the rules where are significant as per the organisation. Depending on the thoughts put forward in the rulings of the AASB 102, the most important considerations are based on the measurability of the net reliable cost or value which needs to be carry forwarded along with the recognition of the revenue. The inventory cost requires to be further considered regarding the numerous evaluation that rely on the factors such as the cost of considering the various evaluations that rely on the cost involved in making the assets use ready (Gu, 2013). Identification of the alternative access of the consequences: In situations where the inventory value is highly valued, the net income requires to be overstated regarding the gross profit of the company. The overvaluation of the earnings retained requires to be understood as per the retained earnings. The equity value, total asset value as well as the current assets of the company may be overvalued along with those earnings which have been retained (Feng et al., 2014). Recommended decision: The most important recommendation that has been seen with the Oasis Ltd. Puts to the fore, the negligence charged in terms of the MYH audit. This however needs to be the primary decision of the count to deal with the situation on its way where MYH may or may not be held on cause of negligence (Gray Ehoff Jr, 2014). Report for the managing partners of the MYH: Depending on the considerations of the AASB 102, on the inventory valuation, the major issue has been considered with the mistake in the inventory valuations at the cost of the recognised assets as well as the carry forwarded values with the revenue recognition. There is the need for the inventory to be measured, depending on the realisable cost or the value, accordingly as the one which is lower (Reineking et al., 2013). The inventory costs need to considered, depending on the cost of conversion, the cost of purchase as well as the incurred cost in making the asset ready for a specific purpose. It requires to be noted that the cost of inventory may not be possible to be recovered in case the inventory portion is damaged or obsolete (Malaescu Sutton, 2014). The cost of inventory is not recovered as expected if the evaluated expenses regarding the sales policy have been expanded (Doxey et al., 2015). The major consideration for the inventory recording below the cost to the net realiz able amount is considered to be reliable by nature that should not be carried by the extra amount expected from the sales realisation. In cases where the inventory is overvalued, the net income as well as the gross profit requires to be overstated. The major impact will lead to the overvaluation of the retained earnings, total assets as well as the stockholders equity. The net income has also been valued overtly for the inventory overvaluation with fewer cost of goods sold, that need to be changed for the revenue. The improved profit amount of the net profit shows the stakeholders equity as also the retained earnings. Because of the overvaluation of inventory the period of accounting has been changed to the period at the beginning of the inventory towards the end of the period of accounting turning onto the starting of inventory accompanied by the suitable time frame. The time period of the cost of the goods needs to be considered with the CGOS, as this is bound to be too high and is considered to be able to bring the period of the next income and also consider the profit to be too low (Haribhai-Pitamber Dhurup, 20 14). According to the case of Morgan Fertilizers, it has been seen that a high amount of value was carried to the inventories in the balance sheet and successfully taken over by the Oasis Ltd. Despite this, after the elapse of two months, the companys inventory was overstated. Further, it has been seen that more than about 50% of the inventory was out of time and the inclusion of the valuation count according to the inventory should not have been done. The various type of inventories were thought to be based on the actual value. MYH should be valued in accordance with the stock valuation of the management (Onyekwelu Ugwuanyi, 2014). The physical conformation of the inventories is the management authorities responsibility as well as their duty to manage the units. The management is also responsible for building the strategy of the inventory checking yearly for establishing the financial statement formulation. Further, the auditor is required to do an entire review of the method to get suitable and genuine information for the audit conformation as well as for tallying the same with the physical inventory. There is a requirement for the auditor to be physically present for the investigation and inspection of the inventory. This is done in order to check the systems set around the management to record changes in the accountability of the procedures. The auditor can opt for the count of the inventory which is present as per the alternative measures as well as the inventory adjustments in the inventory with the count of the accurately recorded units (Carey, Potter Tanewski, 2014). The auditor is required to review the different types of the management information as well as the internal control in terms of the tagging, recounting stock sheets as also the identification of the obsolete as well as the non-mobile or the rejected items. The person also needs to consider the cut-off techniques for the WIP valuation along with inventory movement. According to the general rule, there is no liability of the auditor towards the clients or the third party. The third party consideration is shown as: Untrue financial statements The intentional or reckless ignorance by the financer of a certain untrue fact Committed errors in the final accounts preparation Negligence by the auditors Intentional preparation of the financial statement for the third party to take proper action According to the case Esanda Finance Corporation Ltd v Peat Marwick Hungerfords (1997), it has been seen that the corporation lends money to a particular organisation based on the audit report. After the default of payment however, a claim was made by Esanda to the auditors providing a loan based on the audit report that breached the mandatory standards of accounting. Conclusion: Oasis Ltd. brings forward the charged negligence in terms of the MYH audit. According to the provided case of the MYH, the verification of the stock was done correctly by the auditor; the valuation was also accepted by them. The management however did not consider the stock to be obsolete. Evidence reveals that the Oasis Ltd. was under significant client pressure for the audit completion within one month from the date of balance sheet. References Abernathy, J., Hackenbrack, K. Malcolm X Essays (1092 words) - African-American Muslims

Malcolm X Malcolm X was probably one of the most controversial elements in the civil rights movement. Malcolm X had become a member of the Nation of Islam in his earlier years. The Islamic faith borrows basic ideas from the orthodox teachings of Islam and combines them with the very racist views regarding whites taught by Elijah Mohammed. Malcolm was a very influential priest for the Nation of Islam. Malcolm X questioned some of the views and beliefs of the Nation of Islam, which made Mr. Mohammed and the rest of the Nation angry. This forced Malcolm to travel on a journey overseas to find out what his true beliefs were. When he reached Arabia, he found that it was a different society than that of which Elijah Mohammed had described it. Malcolm discovered that race played no role in determining a person's status in society. Viewing this made a positive change in Malcolm X's beliefs and views. This unity of human kind made Malcolm think and change his ideas about the solution to the racial problem in America. This was the most influential turning point in his life. Malcolm first adopted his views and beliefs of the Nation of Islam while he was serving time in prison. By the time he had gotten out of prison, he had undergone a transformation from a drug-dealing thief to a religious priest for his newfound faith, the Nation of Islam. Malcolm had taken on in full Mr. Mohammed's racist teachings. It was through these teachings that Malcolm X developed his radical views about race in America. Under the guidance and teachings of Elijah Mohammed, Malcolm had targeted all whites and blamed them for position of African Americans in society. He referred to the whites as devils, which tried making the standards of blacks even lower then they already were. Malcolm X believed that complete segregation was the only way to end racial problems in America. He also said that all actions committed against blacks in history were due to the white race as a whole. Another one of his claims was that all blacks should move to Africa, and establish some sort of society there. Sometime after Malcolm X had taken on his new religion, he began to question the validity of the Nation of Islam and some of its leaders. It was found out that Elijah Mohammed had been partaking in sexual misconduct and that he had several illegitimate children. When Malcolm confronted Elijah about these things, Elijah admitted to them. This made Malcolm question the beliefs of Elijah, which were basically the foundations of the Nation of Islam. During this time, many of the leaders of the Nation of Islam became jealous of Malcolm's success. All of these things contributed to Malcolm eventually leaving the Nation of Islam in 1964. Later in 1964, Malcolm X took off on a journey to Arabia to try and find the true religion of Islam. While in Arabia, he underwent his holy pilgrimage. This experience had a very positive impact on Malcolm X. While racial hatred in America had forced black people to the lowest levels of society, Malcolm had come into a society were the color of the skin played no factor in life. While in Arabia, a white leader let Malcolm stayed with him in his room, which would have been unheard of during the civil rights movements in the States. It was during this trip to Arabia that Malcolm made a big change in his way of life. He had finally learned to trust people. He found out that the color of one's skin doesn't reflect what kind of person you are, but it's ones actions that reflect the quality of a person. From his trip, Malcolm threw out all of his racist and segregational views about the American society, and he took on a more Orthodox Islamic approach of racial equality. Once he returned home from his trip, he began preaching about his newly formed philosophies. He created new ideas about race in America and about unity. His greatest change in beliefs were his thoughts about black and white relationships. His conversion to orthodox Islam changed his views upon white people. Around this time, Malcolm adopted a new name. He changed the Nation of Islam ?X? in his name to an orthodox name. Malcolm X was no more; his new name was Malik El-Shabazz. Malcolm changing his name was probably the one that that most symbolized his breaking away from the

Essay on Coevolutionary processes for strategic decisionsEssay Writing Service

Essay on Coevolutionary processes for strategic decisionsEssay Writing Service Essay on Coevolutionary processes for strategic decisions Essay on Coevolutionary processes for strategic decisionsStrategic decision-making in the long-term perspective is complicated because of the high level of ambiguity existing in the environment. Using traditional approaches and traditional tools of analysis might be efficient in short-term perspective and even in the middle-term perspective, but in the long-term perspective the responses of competitors, technological and structural changes of the environment and other major factors reduce the usefulness of existing business analysis tools. The purpose of this paper is to discuss coevolutionary gaming, to consider how this approach can be used to facilitate group decision making, how this approach might affect communication processes and how it can change the biases of group decision-making. It is also important to consider the cases in which coevolutionary gaming might hinder the processes of group decision-making.Coevolutionary gamingOne of approaches to analyzing games with multiple equilibria and infinite games in game theory is coevolutionary gaming. In this approach, the moves of the players are based both of previous actions of the player and its opponents, on the new moves undertaken by other players and on the new abilities acquired by other players. Therefore, the players evolve simultaneously while developing their strategies against each other.Coevolutionary gaming can be used not only in game theory. There are various applications of coevolutionary gaming to planning, resource allocation and decision-making. For example, military structures use the TEMPO military planning game in which several teams can invest into existing forces, acquire extra forces or modify them, invest into RD, develop intelligence and counter-intelligence (Johnson, 2005). The probability of war and war states are announced basing on the systems state. This game helps to achieve optimal allocation of resources in defensive and offensive technologies in the long-term period.Anot her example is the use of coevolutionary gaming for strategic analysis of competitive landscape. The Department of Defense uses coevolutionary gaming approach for analyzing the most viable alternatives in the long-term perspective in cases when strategy landscape is complex (Cares Miskel, 2007). Up to four teams perform strategic moves and responses modeling specific periods of time. The game might last up to 3 days, and the time horizons covered by strategic moves might exceed 20 or 30 years. The trajectory of co-evolution of teams is then analyzed and the dynamics of competition in the long-term period is considered. The impact of coevolutionary gaming on communication processesThere are many ways in which coevolutionary gaming can be used to enhance business decision-making. In particular, the use of coevolutionary gaming can help to determine the optimal approaches to communication and the extent of sharing information with the external world. For example, in one of the coevolut ionary games played by the Department of Defense, one team invested into a powerful RD technology, while the other team chose to invest into deception and concealment which discredited the emerging technology and made its profitability rather low (Cares Miskel, 2007). The considered case illustrates that competitors should choose a very balanced approach to sharing information, should avoid sharing too many details about the emerging technologies and should include various communication techniques as part of their business strategy. The cases of information leaks and deception should also be accounted for in a business strategy. For the purposes of strategic decision-making, it might be reasonable to consider the role of coevolutionary gaming in terms of Johari window. Johari window consists of four zones: open area (known both by the player and others), blind area (unknown by the player, but known by the others), hidden area (known by the player, unknown by the others) and unknown area (unknown by the player and other players) (Griffin Moorhead, 2009). The process of coevolutionary gaming allows to discover certain characteristics from the blind area and place them into the open area, and also helps to identify the characteristics in the hidden area which might be moved to open area and which should not be moved to open area. In the above-mentioned example with RD investments, the blind zone of the player which made RD investments was low sensitivity to external feedback and excess focus on research. These characteristics were uncovered in the coevolutionary gaming process. The impact of coevolutionary gaming on group decision biasesCoevolutionary gaming allows to eliminate some of the group decision biases. Using coevolutionary gaming, the players can explore the dynamics of competitive evolution and assess existing decision-making flaws. Furthermore, coevolutionary gaming helps to work out robust strategies which remain competitive in different evolutionary situations. Arriving to such strategies might require several coevolutionary games, but the resulting strategic approaches might be applicable in a larger variety of competitive situations. At the same time, coevolutionary gaming might also add new group decision-making biases. Since coevolutionary games are largely played between the representatives of one organization or company, the dynamics of these games is influenced by the corporate culture and values, and therefore might not reflect the patterns of true competitive dynamics. Furthermore, the universal strategies obtained in the process of coevolutionary gaming might be not optimal and not profit-maximizing in the majority of situations.ConclusionCoevolutionary gaming is an innovative approach which can be used for developing the frameworks of long-term business strategies. Coevolutionary gaming can be used to improve communication processes within the company as well as external communication processes. Furthermore, coevolut ionary gaming can help to expand to Johari window and to open some companys characteristics previously located in the blind zone. The use of coevolutionary gaming can help to reduce group decision-making biases. However, coevolutionary gaming can also impede decision-making due to the impact of corporate culture on evolutionary strategies and due to the use of similar strategy patterns in different situations. Therefore, it is necessary to have a critical approach the results of coevolutionary gaming.

Business environment Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Business environment - Coursework Example Such has been the effect of globalization that each and every products and services in the modern business environment are being designed keeping in mind the preferences and tastes of the global customers (Ekholm, Forslid and Markusen, 2007). The extent of globalization has surmounted to a degree where economic policies of each and every country are interdependent. This is precisely because of the fact that economic policies in one country have a corresponding impact on the country with which it shares significant trade relationships (Haskel, Pereira and Slaughter, 2007). It is with regards to the facts that have been mentioned above, the researcher believes the statement, â€Å"National boundaries have been surmounted by the phenomenon of ‘globalization’ and therefore, national governments are no longer able to promote independent economic policies† to be absolutely justified. In this study, the researcher will conduct an extensive qualitative research on literat ures that have been published surrounding the topic. By doing so, the researcher will be endeavouring to collect conclusive evidences justifying the credibility of the proposition stated above. Financial integration is considered to be a by-product of globalization by several researchers. The business activities that are conducted in the financial service sector have become heavily globalized. A noteworthy relevance can be found in the banking and insurance industries where each and every business activities have transcend every international boundary. For instance banks all over the world are heavily engaged in transactions which increase their exposure to various foreign exchanges (Naor, Linderman and Schroeder, 2010). Therefore, any unanticipated fluctuations in the foreign exchange rate could have adverse impact on a particular bank due to its exposure to that currency (Hopkins, 2011). That is why national governments have to be very careful while drafting monetary

Data Measurement and Variables - Assignment Example Among the whites, 144 are in rural areas, 142 in suburban areas while the majority; 156 are in urban areas. Brentwood Middle school has the highest number of children in the sample with 84 children of which 80 are whites. In all the selected schools, the whites are the majority. Ridge school has no child from other races in the sample (see table 8). Of the 478 children, 247(51.7%) said their main goal is to make good grades, 141 (29.5) said their main goal was to be popular while the remaining 90 (18.8%) said they wanted to be good in sports (table 9). Most of the children who took part in the study said being good in sports makes one more popular compared to the other variables. Having good looks was the second aspect which makes one popular followed by making good grades in school. Having a lot of money was least considered by the children as a factor contributing to ones popularity. Although most of the children said their maiden goal is to make good grades in school, they again agree that being good in sports makes one more popular than making good grades, having good looks and having lots of money. Both white other race children agree that making good grades does not make one popular but being good in sports and having good looks does. In agreement also is the fact that, having lots of money is the least in making one popular. Again, children from all districts; urban, rural and suburban are in agreement that sports makes one popular followed by good looks. Money is the least in

Salvador Dalis Critical Paranoia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Salvador Dalis Critical Paranoia - Essay Example Dali’s images - his bent watches, his figures, half-human, half chest of drawers – have made him the most famous of all Surrealist painters†. Like many Surrealists, Dali often painted the images he saw in dreams or in nightmHe deliberately cultivated delusions similar to those of paranoiacs in the cause of wresting hallucinatory images from his conscious mind. Like many Surrealists, Dali often painted the images he saw in dreams or in nightmares, but determining which was dream and which was simply his way of pushing social conventions remains difficult to determine. â€Å"Surrealism attempts to further our understanding of the human condition by seeking ways of fusing together our perceived conscious reality with our unconscious dream state† and Dali was a master. His philosophy of art involved embracing the inner animal and exposing the hidden insanity that lurks at the core of every human. Through Dali’s use of line, color, space, shape and other elements, Dali continuously presents unified dreamscape images that successfully combine concepts of the mind while presenting several sides of change from an emotional perspective. His final works often force viewers to consider them from both a distracted metaphysical perspective as in the dream-state as well as from the conscious state in which knowledge can be known and thus related to the overall presentation. His brilliant means of maintaining balance and harmony by repeating patterns through various elements serve to keep his paintings in a constant state of precarious stability that remains perfectly in tune with the message he is trying to convey. He ends up evoking a feeling much like one might feel if they were the spinning coin, standing on its edge and just waiting to find out which way it was going to drop.

Effects of Climate Change on Human Health

Effects of Climate Change on Human Health Climate change has become a hot issue lately. 21st century has to face a new crisis that could have long term effects on the world as well as on human health. Climate change becomes a hot topic now because of things that human have been doing for the last 100 years have been increasing and can change the Earth climate. If there is no preventions, climate change could happen very fast than any in the last 1000 years. Climate change in many ways. Climate changes dramatic and rapid, some the result of the impacts from comets or asteroids (New England Aquarium, 2012). But today, human activities have become the main force causing climate to change rapidly. Climate change is not only about change to the weather. It could affects the environment that people, plants, and animals depend on. This means that climate change is not affect human only but it is about plants, animal, and all the other living and non-living things such as soil, rocks, oceans, and lakes. The melting of polar ice caps shows that human being needs to be concerned about climate change. The rising of sea level could damage the land and if it is occurs without any attention to stop it, human could lose their homes. The effects of climate change that have occurred could wake the people up about the importance to preserve the Earth. Scientists believe that climate change could increase the spreading of disease. Dissemination of diseases could lead to heat-related illnesses and even death. Extreme weather such as storms, could increase the risk of high winds, dangerous flooding, and direct threats to human being and property (United State Environmental Protection Agency, 2012). The number of people facing health problems caused by climate change will rise. Climate change not only causes damage to the Earth, it could also affect human health. Climate change can lead to mental health problems and stress-related disorders, asthma, respiratory allergies and airway diseases, and foodborne diseases and malnu trition. Climate change could bring mental health problems and stress-related disorders. Mental health is a point of well-being in individual when he or she realizes his or her abilities, can work productively, can cope with the normal stresses of life, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. In certain cases, many mental health disorders can also lead to other chronic diseases and even death. Stress- related disorders comes from abnormal responses to acute or prolonged anxiety, and included diseases such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is been reported that 26.2 per cent of Americans over the age of 18 suffer from a diagnosable mental health disorder in a given year, 9.5 per cent suffer from mood disorders, and 6 per cent undergo serious mental illness (Environmental Health Perspectives and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 2010). In 2008, a boy is depressed and is admitted to the psychiatric unit at the Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne as he refusing to drink water because worrying about millions of people would die if he drink the water (Anthes, 2009). This situation shows that even climate change could lead to mental health problems and stress-related disorders. Some children also having terrible nightmares about global-warming-related natural disasters. Responsible persons should know their roles to prevent mental health problem on children before it is too late as they are too young to face climate change. Family members loss is also one of the cause that lead to mental health problems and stress-related disorders. Tornadoes and wildfires, floods, and droughts have caused mental suffering to people since time eternal (Ferris, 2012). Extreme events cause damage or loss of property, death or injury of loved ones, and last but not least the recovery efforts could also lead to stress. Besides, climate change also could cause asthma, respiratory allergies, and airway diseases. A group of doctors said that climate change can lead to the variety of respiratory diseases (Koebler, 2012). Asthma is a chronic disease in which the airways of the lungs become inflamed or narrowed resulting in disruptions to normal breathing pattern. Asthma has become the second main cause of other chronic diseases affecting children. Asthma affects mostly five years old children. However, the frequency of asthma is highest among adults. This disease is dangerous as it could block the airways and end in death if action is not taken fast. Climate change threatens asthma in many ways. Higher temperatures caused by climate change increase certain greenhouse gases such as ozone, sulphur dioxide, and nitric oxide. Smog caused by minute particles from smoke stack emissions and diesel exhaust particles from vehicles create danger for people with respiratory illnesses such as chronic obstructive pu lmonary disease and cystic fibrosis, as well as asthmatics (Scott, 2012). Ground level ozone which is a toxic component of smog causes asthma attacks and makes existing asthma become worse. Dust, soot, fly ash, and exhaust particles can become lodged in the lungs and also could trigger asthma attacks. Research have been made and shown that the number of hospitalisations for asthma has increases as the level of particulate matter rise (Natural Resources Defense Council, 2005). Air pollution also could lead to asthma, respiratory allergies, and airway diseases. Air pollution includes greenhouse gases that could cause global warming by trapping heat from the Sun in the Earths atmosphere. Climate change could cause foodborne diseases and malnutrition. Foodborne disease is a disease caused by consuming contaminated food or drink (MedicineNet.com, 2012). There are more than 250 known as foodborne diseases and most of them are caused by bacteria, parasites, and also viruses. Foodborne diseases spreading in many ways. First symptoms effect in gastrointestinal tract as all foodborne microbes and toxins enter the body (MedicineNet.com, 2012). High air temperature can boost cases of Salmonella and bacteria-related food poisoning as bacteria tends to grow rapidly in warm environments (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2012). These kind of diseases are dangerous as it could cause gastrointestinal distress and death. Heavy rainfall also can spread foodborne diseases by the overflows from sewage treatment plants into fresh water sources and finally effect certain food crops with pathogen-containing feces. Other diseases related with foodborne are Campylobacter, E. C oli, and Calcivirus. Malnutrition is the insufficient, excessive or imbalanced consumption of nutrients (Medical News Today, 2010). Climate change causes insufficient in food all over the world. Depletion of nutritionals food causing many mineral deficiency among people and in certain cases it could lead to death. Poor diet could lead to a vitamin or mineral deficiency and sometimes causing in scurvy, a disease where an individual has a vitamin C deficiency (Medical News Today, 2012). Scurvy still occur although it is a very rare disease. It affects elderly people, alcoholics, or people who live on a diet devoid of fresh fruits and vegetables. Beriberi is caused by lack of vitamin B1. This disease affects the nervous system (Elizabeth Quinn, 2008). Pellagra is also a disease related to malnutrition. It is caused by a deficiency of Vitamin B3. Rickets are caused by the deficiency of vitamin D, phosphorus, or calcium in body. People who are infected with this disease suffer from fragi le bones, delayed growth, pain in bones, and muscle weakness (Elizabeth Quinn, 2008). Climate change has many consequences and effects to the Earth and to humans. Climate change can lead to mental health problems and stress-related disorders. mental health problems not only effect adult but also among children. They tend to have nightmares about global-warming-related natural disasters. Family loss also one of the causes of mental health problems and stress-related disorders. Climate change leads to asthma, respiratory allergies, and airway diseases. Asthma is dangerous as it could block the airways and will lead to death if action is not taken fast. Dust, soot, fly ash, and exhaust particles are dangerous as they become lodged in the lungs and also could trigger asthma attacks. Asthma could attack anytime and anywhere. Precautions are needed for people who already suffer from asthma. Climate change decreases the production of foods on Earth. This situation could lead to foodborne diseases and malnutrition. Foodborne disease is a disease caused by consuming contaminat ed food or drink while malnutrition is the insufficient, excessive of imbalanced consumption of nutrients. Foodborne diseases mostly caused by bacteria, parasites, and viruses. Diseases related to malnutrition are scurvy, Pellagra, and rickets. There are many ways to prevent climate change. Prevention is needed to save the Earth and secure a better place for human being. Human should walk, bike, take mass transit, or carpooling to reduce gas consumption that could lead to asthma. Recycle can saved up to 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide each year if people recycle half of his or her household waste (Earth911.com, 2007). Replacing a compact fluorescent from a regular light bulb could saves 150 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. Turn off your television, computer, and other electronic devices when are not in use as it could save each household thousand of carbon dioxide every year. People can plant trees. Trees can absorb one tone of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. The most important way is by stay informed about the environmental issues (Earth911.com, 2007).

Similarities Between Franz Liszt And Kurt Cobain :: essays research papers fc

Similarities Between Franz Liszt and Kurt Cobain Franz Liszt was one of many classical composers. In some ways, he can be compared to a modern rock and roll star. Franz Liszt was born in Raiding, Hungary, on October 22, 1811. Much like Mozart, he was a very great piano player at a very young age. Liszt composed an opera called Don Sancho at the age of fourteen. Professionals of Liszt's time thought that he was only a genius with the piano, which was not enough to give his ideas the great recognition they deserved. Many people thought that Liszt was â€Å"a mover and a shaker, a rebel, chased women, and had much talent and personality." He had invented the solo recital. When Liszt had a concert, he usually played his own music and came out wearing decorations hanging on chains, which was unusual for his time. For two years Liszt was hospitalized for a nervous breakdown. In some ways he was much like Kurt Cobain, the late lead singer of the rock band Nirvana. Kurt Cobain was born on February 20, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington. He was passed on to several relatives after his parents divorced when he was eight years old. For some time he even lived under a bridge and was hospitalized for a heroin addiction. It was not entirely unexpected that Cobain committed suicide. He had had entered a coma by overdosing on a mixture of champagne and tranquilizers on March 4. Also, Kurt's family history showed that two of his father's uncles committed suicide, along with the fact that there were a lot of dysfunctional marriages and alcoholism present. During a concert, Kurt would jerk around as if he was being electrocuted. After his death, the sale of Nirvana memorabilia increased dramatically. As you can see, both Franz Liszt and Kurt Cobain have some characteristics in common. They had both been hospitalized for an illness. However, one was physical while the other was mental. Both had unusual concert styles. Like many classical composers, Kurt was not truly appreciated until his

Learning to Read and Write

Alana Roberts Essay I February 26th, 2013 â€Å"Learning to Read and Write† by Fredrick Douglas is a story about a slave breaking the bondage of ignorance by learning to read and write. During the course of 7 years Douglas discreetly teaches himself to read and write by means of stealing newspapers, trading food with poor white boys for knowledge and books, as well as copying his master’s handwriting. Douglas learning to read gave him extreme awareness of his condition as he says â€Å"†¦I would at times feel that learning to read had been a curse rather than a blessing. It had given me a view of my wretched condition, without the remedy† (Page 168-169). With his new consciousness he suffered with depression envying his fellow slaves for their â€Å"stupidity. † But, like a true underdog, Douglas perseveres and through hope he escapes to the freedom of the North. There’s a quote by Harriet Tubman â€Å"I freed a thousand slaves, and could have freed a thousand more if they had known they were slaves. † Throughout the essay Douglas evaluates his slave master’s ignorance, his fellow slaves ignorance, and most importantly his own.The definition of a slave is â€Å"a person legally owned by another and having no freedom of action or right to property†. Another definition says slave means â€Å"a person under the domination of another person or some habit or influence. † Douglas finds proof of the flawed ideology that is slavery through the book â€Å"The Colombian Orator. † The book validates Douglas’s belief of human rights and gave him ammo to use against slaveholders who thought otherwise. The dilemma in him learning this illuminating information is his inability to figure a way out of slavery.Douglas writes â€Å"It was this everlasting thinking of my condition that tormented me†¦I saw nothing without seeing it, I heard nothing without hearing it† (Page 169). White slav e owners made it unlawful for slaves to read and write, this ignorance kept them in a state of limbo which stopped their evolution. Without the capacity to examine their situation, they did not change their situation and stayed in this wheel of oppression and exploitation. Ignorance also befalls on the oppressors.Douglas sheds light on how slave owners prayed to Christ, went to church every Sunday and yet mistreated people to the upmost degree and punished them for reading. Southerners often justified slavery by saying they were bringing Christianity to slaves. Christianity is a religion based on love and compassion for your fellow man. Since the Europeans did not believe the Africans were worthy to be in the same human category as them they dehumanized them relating them to animals. Although the bible says â€Å"we must never treat any part of God's creation with contempt. When we do, we are indirectly treating our Creator with contempt. † If they did not believe slaves were worthy to be treated as God’s creation then why did they push their religion on them? The answer is to keep them controlled and confused. Europeans stripped Africans of their traditions starting with their name, this in some degree made Africans like blank canvases ready to be painted anew. Christianity gave slaves hope that one day their situation will change if they prayed hard enough and abide by Christ words. It also gave them a brand new vision of what God should look like. White is good, Black is bad.In the Christian bible they saw Jesus as a white man so in turn they could have related the goodness of Christ to the â€Å"goodness† of their masters. Some slaves even argued about whose master was more kind. I guess this is what Douglas was referring to when he called his fellow slaves â€Å"stupid†. I relate the South hypocritical belief system to that of the Catholic Church during Medieval Times. The church dominated everyone’s lives using fear as a means of getting whatever they wanted from its believers. From a very early age, the people were taught that the only way they could get to Heaven was if the Roman Catholic Church approved them.Just like slaves of America many people could not read or write which kept the priests in power. Peasants worked for free on the church land to pay their tithe or to not have the burden of total damnation. The hypocrisy of Christians of the South exemplifies his mistress who he described before as â€Å"Having bread for the hungry, clothes for the naked, and comfort for every mourner that came within her reach† (Page 167). Under the influence of slavery the angelical woman he knew turned into that of a demon in her conquest to prove her superiority over him. With praying to white Jesus not working, Douglas expresses a vulnerable side when talking about contemplating suicide. â€Å"I often found myself regretting my own existence, and wishing myself dead; and but for hope of being free , I have no doubt but that I should have killed myself†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Page 169). To counter this feeling of hopelessness he birthed a new objective, find the meaning of the word abolition and how it related to himself. Douglas speaks on his ignorance as he writes â€Å" It was always used in such connections as to make it an interesting word to me†¦I found it was â€Å"the act of abolishing†; but then I did not know what was to be abolished. Here I was perplexed. † I find it humorously ironic that he is a prime example of what a abolitionist is and going to become but there was a point in time were he didn’t recognize what the word meant. Using context clues Douglas unmask the true meaning of abolition when reading an article on abolishment of slavery in the District of Columbia. In conclusion Fredrick Douglas’s â€Å"Learning to Read and Write† maturely examines the world in which he lived in. Though Douglas was a slave physically he was never a slave mentally. He analyzes and challenges the norm in his quest for freedom; and because of Douglas’s thirst for knowledge he escapes the bondage of ignorance. Douglas also points out that learning doesn’t make the man free but it is how you use this knowledge to obtain freedom. In our day and age we take for granted things like owning a book, going to school, even the simple principle of being who we want to be. Douglas is a hero to Black Americans as well as people who believe knowledge is power. Top 10 Confused Words in English [I-L]

Top 10 Confused Words in English [I-L] Top 10 Confused Words in English [I-L] Top 10 Confused Words in English [I-L] By Maeve Maddox Seven of these ten commonly confused word pairs beginning with the letters I-L are frequent enough to have earned one or more full posts at Daily Writing Tips. You’ll find links at the end of each item. 1. illicit / elicit Illicit is an adjective meaning, â€Å"not allowed by law or social conventions.† Elicit is a verb meaning, â€Å"to draw out a reply or reaction.† 2. imply / infer Increasing numbers of speakers ignore the distinction between these words, but it remains a useful one. Imply is â€Å"to suggest indirectly.† Infer is â€Å"to draw a conclusion.† Related posts: Confused Words #6: Imply vs. Infer Imply and Infer 3. it’s / its Despite the hundreds, perhaps thousands of explanations to be found on the Web regarding the difference between these two spellings, the mistake of writing it’s for its remains the most common written error of them all. It’s is the contracted form of the words it and is. Its is the possessive adjective that corresponds to his and their: Max has dyed his hair red. The children have passed their exams. The cat has paint on its tail. Related posts: It’s or Its? The Truth About â€Å"It’s† 4. jibe / jive The most common error with this pair is to use jive, a word that derives from musical terminology, in a context that calls for jibe, a word that means, â€Å"to agree with.† Here are two correct uses of the word jibe: His interpretation of the law doesn’t jibe with mine. Your explanation does not jibe with the facts. Related posts: Gibe, Gybe, Jibe, and Jive 5. loath / loathe Loath (pronounced with an unvoiced th like the one in thin) is an adjective originally meaning hostile, angry, or spiteful. In modern usage it means averse, disinclined, reluctant, or unwilling, as in this New York Times headline:† Inquiry Goes To Committee That May Be Loath to Act.† A variant spelling is loth. Loathe (pronounced with a voiced th like the one in this) is a verb meaning â€Å"to feel strong aversion for† as in the title of a TED topic: â€Å"Why Do So Many People Loathe Their Jobs?† Note: TED is a nonprofit organization that sponsors and broadcasts lectures on various social issues. The name is an acronym formed from the words Technology, Entertainment, and Design. Related posts: Verb Mistakes #5: Loathe â€Å"Loath† and â€Å"Loathe† 6. loose / lose Loose can function as a verb meaning â€Å"to free† or â€Å"to release,† but its most common use is as an adjective to mean, â€Å"not tight.† Lose is a verb that has various connotations of loss. For example, a person may lose his way in the woods. The past tense of lose is lost. Related posts: Confused Words #3: Lose, Loose, Loss Loose or Lose? 7. latter / ladder As a noun, latter means â€Å"the person or thing mentioned second of two.† A ladder is an appliance of wood or other material, consisting of a series of bars/rungs/steps/ fixed between two supports. Speakers who do not distinguish clearly between the sounds of t and d may misspell latter as ladder, as in these examples: INCORRECT: There are two modes to constructed play: Casual, and Ranked. Some people choose the former, some people choose the ladder.- Gaming site. CORRECT : There are two modes to constructed play: Casual, and Ranked. Some people choose the former, some people choose the latter. INCORRECT: Many police officers know that much of their job is to collect revenue. It’s now apparent, that when given the option to conduct extortion or not, they will choose the ladder.- A talk radio website. CORRECT : Many police officers know that much of their job is to collect revenue. It’s now apparent, that when given the option to conduct extortion or not, they will choose the latter. Related post: â€Å"Latter,† not â€Å"Ladder† 8. lightening / lightning The word lightening comes from the verb to lighten, â€Å"to make lighter.† An artist can lighten a color. A kindly neighbor can lighten someone’s loneliness. A driver can lighten a load. Dark hair may be lightened by the sun. Lightning is â€Å"the visible discharge of electricity between one group of clouds and another, or between the clouds and the ground.† 9. libel / slander Libel functions as a noun and as a verb. The noun is usually used to mean â€Å"a  published statement damaging to the reputation of a person.† The verb means, â€Å"to defame or discredit by the circulation of libelous statements.† As a noun, slander denotes â€Å"the utterance or dissemination of false statements or reports concerning a person in order to defame or injure that person.† As a verb, slander is â€Å"to spread slanderous reports about.† The legal difference between the two is that libel is written and slander is spoken or conveyed in some other non-written manner. Another error with libel is that the noun (libel) is sometimes used incorrectly in place of the adjective liable, as in this example from a Canadian government site: INCORRECT: The landlord testifies that the tenant became libel for the rent from December 01, 2008 and that he allowed her to move in on November 19, 2008 until December 01 without payment of rent. CORRECT : The landlord testifies that the tenant became liable for the rent from December 01, 2008 and that he allowed her to move in on November 19, 2008 until December 01 without payment of rent. Liable is an adjective that means, â€Å"bound or obliged by law or in accordance with a rule or convention.† Related post: Is it Libel, or is it Slander? 10. lay / lie Some would argue that insisting on the distinction between the verbs lay (to put or to place) and lie (to recline) is beating a dead horse. I continue to insist on the difference because I believe that speakers who are bright enough to want to master a standard form of English are bright enough to learn the difference between these two verbs. Tell your children to lay their homework on the table. Tell your dog he may lie under it. Lay is transitive (has an object). Lie is intransitive (has no object). Related posts: Verb Mistakes #9: Past Tense forms of Lay and Lie Lay vs. Lie: What’s So Hard? Mixing up â€Å"lay† and â€Å"lie† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Cyanide Poisoning From Apples, Peaches, Cherries

Cyanide Poisoning From Apples, Peaches, Cherries The weather is nice, so I was out looking at trees and shrubs to add to my garden. I noticed the tags on trees from the Prunus genus (cherries, peaches, plums, apricots, almonds) carried the warning that the leaves and other parts of the plant can be toxic if ingested. Thats true of other members of the rose family as well (large family which includes roses, but also apples and pears). The plants produce cyanogenic glycosides which can lead to cyanide poisoning in people and animals if enough of the compound is ingested. Some leaves and wood contain relatively high levels of the cyanogenic compounds. Seeds and pits from these plants also contain the compounds, though you need to chew several of the seeds to get a dangerous exposure. (This Letter to the Editor of American Family Physician cites references for fatalities from apple seeds and apricot kernels, in addition to other plants.) If you swallow the odd seed or two, dont be concerned. Your body is well-equipped to detoxify low d oses of cyanide. However, consult poison control if you suspect your child or pet (or farm animal) has eaten several seeds. If youre out camping and want sticks for roasting hotdogs and marshmallows, avoid using twigs from these plants.Apple Seeds Cherry Pits Are Poisonous | Drugs from PlantsPhoto: Darren Hester

Reflection On Therapeutic Interaction Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Reflection On Therapeutic Interaction - Essay Example This includes silence, enthusiasm, and touch. Touch can imply different things and is therefore, referred to as a silent language of nonverbal behavior. It is the most affectionate way of remitting warmth. An example where touch worked was when patients were anxious or impatient I would give them a warm hug or hold their hands and talk to them. Not many patients who are usually comfortable with touch and this made me learn to respect boundaries when dealing with every patient. I could also use silence as a communication skill. This could give the patient and I time to reflect on future occurrences in the patient's care. When offering therapeutic therapy nurses are required to maintain professionalism and boundaries when dealing with patients. This is because while interacting with these patients nurses like other people can become emotionally attached to patients, and this is not a good show of the therapeutic relationship. I had to be highly confidential with the patient as some of them could give extremely vulnerable information due to their health situation. In order for this therapy to work well on the patient then there needs to be trust and confidentiality. This would work whenever a patient is extremely vulnerable, and it will help improve his/her health if the trust is there. Whenever I was needed somewhere, and I was with a patient, I would assure the patient that I would come back and if I was tied down I would send a colleague to assure the patient that I was going to come back.... Discussion #8 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Discussion #8 - Essay Example It was only after the civil war and the abolition of slavery that the prison system was developed. Before that time correction was limited to physical torture or to capital punishment. Therefore, the idea of prisons was originated as a substitute for slavery. In the beginning of the installment of prisons, prisoners had to endure the Chain Gang system under-which they were forced to work in inhuman conditions. The actual prison labor system is viewed by many as the extension to the above form of abuse as it's based on the exploitation of prisoners. Imprisoned workers are extremely underpaid and don't get the same rights as regular workers such as health insurance and retirement benefits. Add to that that they are obliged to work without their consent. All the previous facts prove that prisons weren't developed for just correctional purposes but mostly for economical ones. That is most proven by the actual tendencies to privatize prisons so that these will be run by various profit organizations instead of the government. For the reasons mentioned earlier, prisoners are considered to be a treasure for these organizations' runners. That provides a logical explanation for the explosion of the incarceration rates in the United States the last few years. Incarceration rates in the USA are considered to be the highest in the world indeed! It comes as a matter of fact that black workers are incarcerated at over eight times the white rate.

Response to Intervention Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Response to Intervention - Assignment Example This is a, â€Å"Tiered system designed to integrate assessment, instruction, and data-based decision making to improve the outcomes for all students in both regular and special education classrooms† (Kubiszyn & Borich, p. 57). There is a set purpose to RTI, along with various benefits and challenges, that are worthy of study and this forms the basis for this paper. The Purpose of RTI Response to Intervention is designed to provide the classroom teacher with a tiered approach to managing classroom instruction. This method is designed to differentiate students and allow teachers the opportunity to determine what interventions, or instructional modifications, might be needed for their students based on past performance. The RTI system is actually geared to combine the areas of assessment, instruction, and data based decision making in an effort to improve outcome for all students, no matter if they are in a regular or special education classroom (Kubiszyn & Borich, 2009, p. 57). Students that do not respond well to the first tier of services would then be monitored according to the second tier. This is usually about 15% of the student population (Kubiszyn & Borich, 2009, p. 57). The second tier would involve teachers monitoring those students and providing them with more intensive instruction. The monitoring of this instruction would be ongoing and would be supplemented with regular formative assessment

Apollo 13 Video Clip Essay Example for Free

Apollo 13 Video Clip Essay In chapters seven through ten several OB topics were examined. As you review the video, look for incidences that relate to OB concepts that you observe. Identify two concepts, explain where you observed them in the video and to which chapter they apply. Provide either work or personal examples to support each of the observations Post: Tiffany Demko Week 4 Discussion – MGMT 362 Apollo 13 Video clip First off this is a great movie, and I’m not much of a movie buff. I found way more than just 2 ob concepts in this clip. I think that managing a team is a difficult task because it requires a hardy personality to be a calming rational thinker while taking others in consideration, and blocking the negativity or tension that maybe building. Bill Paxton Tom Hank’s characters points out that the smartest people on the planet have been brought together to make sure every setting is correct, and all the resources needed are available. Tom Hanks points out that they have a large amount of variables to consider when overcoming the challenges before them, and they are just starting that â€Å"task† list so to speak. Making decisions fairly to limit the inequity amongst the group is vital to the members working together to achieve their common goal, getting home. Remembering that a team is brought together because of their diverse roles, and knowledge that they bring to the table, each person working in a group or on a team has been given that opportunity because of their expertise. In any crisis situation it is always a good idea to apply forward thinking, and I think that is what Kevin Bacon’s character was trying to point out. Handling a potential challenge before it becomes a real issue is value added indeed, all to often we can fix something at that moment that could help avoid other pitfalls, but if we wait until we get to that item on the â€Å"task list† one may not have the same options available to them. Respect must always be given among a team in my opinion, it’s how you grow, and it’s what you personally should be able to expect, and rely on from those your working with.

Hydrogen Fuel or Others Essay -- Hybrid Cars Automobiles Essays

Hydrogen Fuel or Others It is stated in the article â€Å"Benefits of a Hydrogen Economy† in Hydrogen Future that if we use hydrogen as an energy source in the U.S.A, it could help address concerns about energy security, global climate change, and air quality. Hydrogen fuel cells appear to be an one important enabling technology for increasing energy savings and reducing global climate change; however, I suggest that much more research is needed before the nation becomes absorbed in developing the hydrogen economy. In addition to the hydrogen fuel cells, the nation should continue to investigate other technologies such as new generation diesel, hybrids and solar cells. At present these technologies have come to maturity to some degree. I believe that now it is time to consider the fusion of these technologies. It is stated in the article â€Å"Benefits of a Hydrogen Economy† that, if we use hydrogen in very high efficiency fuel cells for our transportation and to generate power, we could significantly reduce the Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. But the article â€Å"Road to Hydrogen Cars May Not Be So Clean† claims that, even though hydrogen could be generated via electrolysis without producing GHG, the reality is that oil companies plan to generate hydrogen from methane. And the most famous GHG, carbon dioxide, could be generated as a byproduct of the methane treatment process. Furthermore, according to the article â€Å"Fueling the future –Hydrogen Fuel Cells-†, electricity can be used to split water into its hydrogen and oxygen constituents; however, it takes far more electricity to make the hydrogen than the amount of electricity which hydrogen can generate in a fuel cell. To make matters worse, it might take a lot of electricity ... ... cells. Indeed, now it is time to consider seriously the fusion of these technologies. Internal and External Force of Change for Synergetic Solutions Essay

Synergetic Solutions lets us know that change is something that will happen no matter what we do. Executing change is not as simple as acknowledging the need for change. Synergetic Solutions understands the internal and external factors that have required a change to take place, and desire to improve operations but executing the change can be difficult when met with conflict. Both employees and leaders must understand, through good communication, the need for change and the way by which to achieve that change successfully. To survive in recent market environment organizations need to change constantly with current conditions that are constantly, who can accept change survive and who cannot accept change and suffer the consequences. Changes brought a effect of strategic initiatives within a company and how it affects work design and organization culture. While change is occurring you can see opposition to change at individual and organizational levels, change agent has to implement va rious tactics to restrain the resistance and dead organization step reward to work on new strategies. Synergetic solution Inc. is a $6 million company in the business of system integration assembling and reselling leading computers brands. It has 300 employees mostly in the sales and service departments working in five locations across the east–coast. most employees in this trading organization possess only basic computer assembling and trouble shooting skills, while a few technically higher skilled individuals operates as the specialists. Harold red, chief executive officers made changes in to the network solution business of designing and implementing complete computing networks. He got four of synergetic brightest engineers trained and certified on networking technologies. One internal factor that has caused Synergetic Solutions to implement change is limited skills of employees. Most employees have basic skills to complete tasks but how many  continue with education hours to keep progressing and learning? As with Synergetic Solutions, most employees have the basic computer skills needed but only a few employees are specialists in a chosen field (UOP, 2010). Being a specialist requires more time, training, and education which most employees will not do individually but will do collectively within the organization if the organization provides opportunity. For any change to occur positively, employees need to be trained to implement new routines and daily processing of tasks that increase skills and abilities of eac h employee. With 300 employees who mainly work in sales and service, Synergetic Solutions must implement change to educate these employees to expand skills and abilities.Another internal factor for change is to increase revenue. The goal of Synergetic Solutions is to increase revenue every quarter and by 80 percent over the next nine months. To be successful and meet the goals of earned revenue, a change must take place. Synergetic Solutions is taking a look at the certification and training needed to redirect the organization from reselling leading computers to designing and implementing tasks.

A Closer Look at Alice Munros Short Story Runaway

A Closer Look at Alice Munros Short Story Runaway Runaway,  by the Nobel Prize-winning Canadian author Alice Munro, tells the story of a young woman who refuses a chance to escape a bad marriage. The story debuted in the August 11, 2003,  issue of The New Yorker. It also appeared in Munros 2004 collection by the same name. You can read the story for free on The New Yorkers website. Multiple Runaways Runaway people, animals, and emotions abound in the story. The wife, Carla, is twice a runaway. When she was 18 and college-bound, she ran off to marry her husband, Clark, against her parents  wishes and has been estranged from them since. And now, getting on a bus to Toronto, she runs away a second time- this time from Clark. Carlas beloved white goat, Flora, also appears to be a runaway, having inexplicably disappeared shortly before the start of the story. (By the end of the story, though, it seems likely that Clark has been trying to get rid of the goat all along.) If we think of runaway  as meaning out of control  (as in runaway train),  other examples come to mind in the story. First, there is Sylvia Jamiesons runaway emotional attachment to Carla (what Sylvias friends describe dismissively as an inevitable crush on a girl). There is also Sylvias runaway involvement in Carlas life, pushing her along a path that Sylvia imagines is best for Carla, but which she is, perhaps, not ready for or doesnt really want. Clark and Carlas marriage seems to be following a runaway trajectory. Finally, there is Clarks runaway temper, carefully documented early in the story, that threatens to become truly dangerous when he goes to Sylvias house in the night to confront her about encouraging Carlas departure. Parallels Between Goat and Girl Munro describes the goats behavior in ways that mirror Carlas relationship with Clark. She writes: At first she had been Clark’s pet entirely, following him everywhere, dancing for his attention. She was as quick and graceful and provocative as a kitten, and her resemblance to a guileless girl in love had made them both laugh. When Carla first left home, she behaved much in the starry-eyed manner of the goat. She was filled with giddy delight  in her pursuit of a more authentic kind of life  with Clark. She was impressed by his good looks, his colorful employment history, and everything about him that ignored her. Clarks repeated suggestion that Flora might have just gone off to find herself a billy  obviously parallels Carlas running away from her parents to marry Clark. Whats especially troubling about this parallel is that the first time Flora disappears, she is lost but still alive. The second time she disappears, it seems almost certain that Clark has killed her. This suggests that Carla is going to be in a much more dangerous position for having returned to Clark. As the goat matured, she changed alliances. Munro writes, But as she grew older she seemed to attach herself to Carla, and in this attachment, she was suddenly much wiser, less skittish- she seemed capable, instead, of a subdued and ironic sort of humor. If Clark has, in fact, killed the goat (and it seems likely he has),  it is symbolic of his commitment to killing off any of Carlas impulses to think or act independently- to be anything but the guileless girl in love  who married him. Carla’s Responsibility Though Clark is clearly presented as a murderous, stultifying force, the story also places some of the responsibility for Carlas situation on Carla herself. Consider the way Flora allows Clark to pet her, even though he may have been responsible for her original disappearance and is probably about to kill her. When Sylvia tries to pet her, Flora puts her head down as if to butt. Goats are unpredictable,  Clark tells Sylvia. They can seem tame but they’re not really. Not after they grow up.  His words seem to apply to Carla, as well. She has behaved unpredictably, siding with Clark, who was causing her distress, and butting  Sylvia by exiting the bus and forgoing the escape Sylvia has offered. For Sylvia, Carla is a girl who needs guidance and saving, and it is hard for her to imagine that Carlas choice to return to Clark was the choice of an adult woman. Is she grown up?  Sylvia asks Clark about the goat. She looks so small. Clarks answer is ambiguous: She’s as big as she’s ever going to get.  This suggests that Carlas being grown up  might not look like Sylvias definition of grown up.  Eventually, Sylvia comes to see Clarks point. Her letter of apology to Carla even explains that she made the mistake of thinking somehow that Carlas freedom and happiness were the same thing. Clarks Pet Entirely On first reading, you might expect that just as the goat shifted alliances from Clark to Carla, Carla, too, might have changed alliances, believing more in herself and less in Clark. Its certainly what Sylvia Jamieson believes. And its what common sense would dictate, given the way Clark treats Carla. But Carla defines herself entirely in terms of Clark. Munro writes: While she was running away from him- now- Clark still kept his place in her life. But when she was finished running away, when she just went on, what would she put in his place? What else- who else- could ever be so vivid a challenge? And it is this challenge that Carla preserves by holding out against the temptation  to walk to the edge of the woods- to the place where she saw the buzzards- and confirm that Flora was killed there. She doesnt want to know.

informative speech on jazz tru essays

informative speech on jazz tru essays Purpose: By the end of the speech I hope you all will understand the joys and pains of playing jazz on the trumpet. Introduction: (turn off lights) Imagine its night time in New York City. You head over to the village vanguard to see the hottest players in jazz, out do each other on stage. You enter the club it seats about fifty but theres more like 80 all wanting the same thing, to hear John Coltranes sextet perform. (play Lazy Bird up to 1:40). The recording you just heard was from the John Coltrane album titled BLUE TRAIN. Jazz is one of the most difficult genres of music to perform on the trumpet because of its demands on a persons body, technical skill as well as their ability to spontaneously create a melody, also know as improvising. Credibility: You may be asking yourselves what would this young man know about jazz and why should I listen to him. Well to contradict the stereotype that jazz is old people music I have been listening to and playing jazz for the past 8 years and also teach private lessons. I have been principal chair in every band I have played in. In high school I was selected to play in the city honor band, received an award for jazz player of the year, received a scholarship and the semper fidelis award from the United States Marine Corp for excellence in music. There are numerous other awards presented to me by my school, and I led the jazz ensemble to place fourth at the national invite Monterey jazz festival sponsored by Clint Eastwood. Now that I have established my credibility I would like to move on. Playing the trumpet requires many hours of practice daily, usually until your body quits. During these practices you do arpeggios, chromatic scales, lip slurs, high notes, long tones and so on. All these exercises increase your endurance and ability to improvise. Main Points: some injuries or physical strain one can acquire are bleeding lips, headaches, passing out, dizziness, crooked te...

How to Find the Phoenix Constellation

How to Find the Phoenix Constellation The Phoenix constellation is a southern-hemisphere star pattern. Named after the mythical bird, Phoenix is part of a larger grouping of southern-hemisphere constellations referred to as the Southern Birds. Finding Phoenix To locate Phoenix, look toward the southern region of the southern hemisphere sky. Phoenix is located between the constellations Eridanus (the River), Grus (the crane), and Horologium, the clock. Parts of the constellation are visible to northern hemisphere observers south of the 40th parallel, but the best view is reserved for those living well south of the equator.   Phoenix constellation is a galaxy-hunters delight, with a number of galaxies and clusters. Click to enlarge. Carolyn Collins Petersen The Story of Phoenix In China, this constellation was considered part of the nearby Sculptor star pattern and was viewed as a fish-catching net. In the Middle East, the constellation was called Al Rial and Al Zaurak, the latter of which means the boat. This terminology makes sense, as the constellation is located nearby to Eridanus, the river constellation. In the 1600s, Johann Bayer named the constellation Phoenix and recorded it in his astronomical charts. The name came from the Dutch term Den voghel Fenicx or The Bird Phoenix. French explorer and astronomer Nicolas de Lacaille also charted Phoenix and applied Bayer designations to the brightest stars in the pattern.   The Stars of Phoenix The main part of Phoenix looks like a triangle and a lopsided quadrangle stuck together. The brightest star is called Ankaa, and its official designation is alpha Phoenicis (alpha indicates the brightness). The word Ankaa comes from Arabic and means Phoenix. This star is an orange giant located about 85 light-years away from the Sun. The second brightest star, beta Phoenicis, is actually a pair of yellow giant stars in orbit around a common center of gravity. Other stars in Phoenix form the shape of a boats keel. The official constellation assigned by the International Astronomical Union contains many more stars, some of which appear to have planetary systems around them. The constellation Phoenix as shown in the official IAU charts. IAU/Sky Publishing Phoenix is also the radiant for a pair of meteor showers called the December Phoenicids and the July Phoenicids. The December shower occurs from November 29 until December 9; its meteors come from the tail of comet 289P/Blanpain. The July shower is very minor and occurs from July 3 to July 18 each year.   Deep-Sky Objects in Phoenix Located in the far south position in the sky, Phoenix is far from the Milky Ways abundant star clusters and nebulae. Nevertheless, Phoenix is a galaxy hunters delight, with numerous types of galaxies to explore. Amateur stargazers with a decent telescope will be able to view NGC 625, NGC 37, and a group of four called Roberts Quartet: NGC 87, NGC 88, NGC 89, and NGC 92. The quartet is a compact galaxy group about 160 million light-years away from us.   The Phoenix Cluster galaxies seen in x-ray, visible light, and ultraviolet wavelengths. X-ray: NASA/CXC/MIT/M.McDonald et al; Optical: NASA/STScI; Radio: TIFR/GMRT Professional astronomers study these galaxies in an effort to understand how such giant associations of galaxies exist. The biggest one in the area is the Phoenix Cluster: 7.3 million light-years across and located 5.7 billion light-years away. Discovered as part of the South Pole Telescope collaboration, the Phoenix Cluster contains a highly active central galaxy that produces hundreds of new stars per year. Although it cant be seen with amateur telescopes, an even larger cluster exists in this region, too: El Gordo. El Gordo is comprised of two smaller galaxy clusters colliding with each other.

Sociology of Health Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Sociology of Health - Essay Example If both health and illness are viewed from a sociological perspective then it can be said that a body which breaks down should necessarily be repaired. Medical systems are required to systematize work around birth, disease, decay and death. Thus a person who is ill requires immediate programs to restore his health. Medical methods are necessary to organize one individual even when he is comes in this world. Illness and health are directly related to the social norms in this society. Illness is still excessively found in the lower classes of this society. This is because these classes are not provided with adequate health facilities on the right time. This shows the difference between the model of health and illness as the model of health clearly illustrates that one should be given adequate medical treatment faced by the problem of illness. However this is not possible because of the sociological factors which are involved in this concept. These factors include how one individual liv es and what age group does he belong to. It can be concluded that in order to practically apply the model of health it is necessary that all the problems encountered should be solved first. Ans. 3. Examine the key findings of the Black Report Ans. The Black Report was a research taken out in Britain in the 1980s to find out the issues about health and society. It gave an overview about the health social inequalities based on use of occupation as an indicator of social class. It analyzed the records of health of different people who belonged to different classes. All these results were analyzed according to the categories designed by the Registrar. The report concluded the over all issues of health in the UK. It stated that the health of the nation had improved over all but there was a difference of mortality among the classes. The individuals who belonged to the lower class were more vulnerable to diseases than the individuals who belonged to the upper class. It showed that the health standards descended as the class of people was lowered. The report clearly illustrated that all these health problems were related to the social factors such as low income, unemployment and poor living standards. The awareness factor was als o pointed out in the report as many people were not aware of different diseases which were being a cause of their death. The Black Report pointed out the basic factors which affected the overall health standards in the UK and desired a change in the overall system of the UK.4. Explain how the doctor / patient relationship influences the health of the patient Ans. There are contrary views on the doctor patient relationship in this world. Some doctors are of the view that if they get close to their patients then they are not able to properly treat their patients. However on the other hand it can be said that a good doctor patient relationship can lead to the recovery of the patient in an early time. This relationship is of a great influence to the patient's health behavior. Research has been done in order to find about the relationship between a doctor and a patient. A research conducted in Texas adopted the way of

American Music History Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

American Music History - Essay Example This first part of the book also illustrates how more cultured music began developing in America through the formation of singing schools as a means of improving the music used in church and then how music began expanding to become more secular in nature as it emerged as a primary source of entertainment. Part two examines America’s shift to a more European form of musical expression in the addition of various complexities such as harmony and multi-instrumental pieces despite a continued love for earlier musical forms in the country and singing schools. Music became more varied as well, as minstrel shows featured white people mimicking the songs of the African American slaves and concerts grew in popularity. Soloists were fewer but remained popular, often touring the country to provide entertainment. From the culture of mixed musical sounds grew entirely new forms of musical expression such as ragtime, mountain music, honky-tonk, swing, jazz and the blues, which is the primary topic of the third part of the book. The country’s love for much of jazz music led to the formation of the Big Bands, which became popular during the 1930s and necessitated the creation of arranged tunes instead of the earlier improvised versions and the diversification of jazz overall. Part four highlights the influence of Latin dances on the American music scene and the ways in which country-western merged with jazz and the blues to create rock and roll. Motown, Soul and the British invasion through the Beatles and the Rolling Stones are included in this part of the book. Punk, New Age, Grunge, Rap and the introduction of electronic instruments are also discussed in this segment. Part five turns its attention to the entertainment aspects of America’s musical scene in things such as Burlesque, Vaudeville, operettas, revues, Broadway and the American musicals. The incorporation of music into almost all of America’s popular
